Forum on Natural Capital Accounting for Better Policy, Kampala 2019

The fourth global Forum on Natural Capital Accounting (NCA) for Better Policy will take place on 18-19 November 2019 in Kampala, Uganda. The Policy Forum is co-organized by the World Bank, United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), the Government of Netherlands, and the Government of Uganda.

The theme for this year’s Policy Forum is Measuring and valuing natural capital for improved landscape management. The Policy Forum will showcase how NCA can inform land use management and ecosystem protection and provide a forum to share experience between those working on integrated landscape management (ILM) and data providers to better understand the policies aimed at improving landscape governance and management and the information needs. The Policy Forum will also discuss entry points to influence CBD’s post-2020 biodiversity framework. Participants will include government representatives from developing and developed countries, as well as organizations working on NCA, environmental-economic policy, and/or integrated landscape management.

On Wednesday, 20 November, the Government of Uganda will organize a field trip to an ecosystem around Kampala to offer a chance for participants to appreciate the vital services the ecosystem offers to the community, and to reflect on associated policy and information needs.

Back-to-back with the NCA Policy Forum, on Thursday, 21 November, an Africa Regional NCA Policy Forum will be held. The objective of this event will be to form a Regional Community of Practice on NCA for Africa: identifying common challenges and opportunities and to discuss how countries can support each other in mainstreaming natural capital considerations into policy. The Community of Practice will be supported by the World Bank, the Gaborone Declaration for a Sustainable Africa (GDSA), UNSD and the Government of Netherlands. Representatives from African countries as well as organizations working in Africa will be invited to join this event.
