As part of the project “Natural Capital Accounting and Valuation of Ecosystem Services” funded by the European Union, UNSD undertakes the second assessment mission to China together with the UN Environment from 21-29 May to provide technical assistance to the National Bureau Statistics (NBS) of China on 1) strengthening the national compilation of natural resource balance sheet on land, forestry and water, and 2) piloting ecosystem accounting in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Guizhou Province.  &nb

The objective of the meeting is to establish and strengthen the dialogue between policy makers, environmental economists, ecosystem valuation practitioners and accountants, in the context of the Aichi Target 2 which calls to mainstream biodiversity in national accounts and action 5 of the European Union Biodiversity strategy of 2020, which calls to map and assess the state of ecosystems and their services, including economic valuation and integration into accounting and reporting systems.

The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), in collaboration with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), is organizing a training programme to strengthen the capacity of the countries of Western Asia and North Africa in support of the worldwide implementation of the SEEA 2012 Central Framework and environment-related Sustainable Development Goals indicators.

South Africa is one of the five pilot countries participating in an international project on ecosystem accounting.  The project, entitled Natural Capital Accounting and Valuation of Ecosystem Services, is led by the United Nations Statistics Division and UN Environment, with funding from the European Union.

Stats SA and SANBI are leading the project in South Africa and will work closely with a range of national and sub-national stakeholders to further develop ecosystem accounts nationally.

The third Joint OECD/UNECE Seminar on the Implementation of the SEEA will take place on 21-22 February 2018 in Geneva, following up from the two previous seminars in 2015 and 2016.

The aim of the seminars is to provide a platform for sharing experiences and knowledge on SEEA implementation and to facilitate coordination between all relevant partners in the UNECE region. The seminars are planned to be held regularly with a long-term view to support implementation of the SEEA.

The Closing National Workshop for the United Nations Development Account Project in Indonesia is organized by the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) in collaboration with Statistics Indonesia. The project aims to enhance the capacity of National Statistical Offices of the project countries (Indonesia and Malaysia) in the implementation of the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA).
