Projects

The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) works in close collaboration with national and international partners to lead several projects advancing environmental and ecosystem accounting in Member States. By working with Member States to compile SEEA accounts and initiate pilot testing of SEEA Ecosystem Accounting, UNSD aims to mainstream SEEA-related analysis and decision making at the national, city and corporate level and build technical capacity in Member States.

Current and previous projects include:

Natural Capital Accounting and Valuation of Ecosystem Services

The United Nations Statistics Division, the United Nations Environment Programme, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, and the European Union have launched the project “Natural Capital Accounting and Valuation of Ecosystem Services” (NCAVES).

The project funded by the European Union through its Partnership Instrument (PI), aims to assist the five participating partner countries, namely Brazil, China, India, Mexico and South Africa, to advance the knowledge agenda on environmental-economic accounting, in particular ecosystem accounting. It will initiate pilot testing of SEEA Ecosystem Accounting (SEEA EA) with a view to:

  • Improving the measurement of ecosystems and their services (both in physical and monetary terms) at the (sub)national level;
  • Mainstreaming biodiversity and ecosystems at (sub)national level policy planning and implementation;
  • Contribute to the development of internationally agreed methodology and its use in partner countries.

The project will have a duration until the end of 2021.

Supporting SEEA Implementation in Countries

The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) has been working on projects that support countries in developing and strengthening their environmental-economic accounting programmes. Most recently, the UNSD led a three-year project (2015-2017) to implement the SEEA in Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia and Uganda to improve monitoring of sustainable development. Advancing Natural Capital Accounting (ANCA) Project

The United Nations Statistics Division, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) TEEB Office and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity have carried out a project on Advancing Natural Capital Accounting (ANCA) from 2014 to 2016, funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD). The project worked to advance ecosystem accounting in six pilot countries—Bhutan, Chile, Indonesia, Mauritius, Mexico and Vietnam. The following were produced under the project:

1) A five-year Global Strategy for advancing the testing and research agenda of the SEEA Ecosystem Accounting;

2) Guidelines on testing;

3) Training material;

4) Communication and outreach material for SEEA; and

5) Country plans for each of the pilot countries.
