ESCAP and UN Environment are leading a global effort to develop statistical guidance based on the System of Environmental Economic Accounting (SEEA). The Ocean Accounts Platform will provide guidance on electing, prioritizing and standardizing data of national, regional and global importance, so that it can be integrated and thereby provide a comprehensive view.
South Africa is one of the five pilot countries participating in an international project on ecosystem accounting. The project, entitled Natural Capital Accounting and Valuation of Ecosystem Services, is led by the United Nations Statistics Division and UN Environment, with funding from the European Union.
Stats SA and SANBI are leading the project in South Africa and will work closely with a range of national and sub-national stakeholders to further develop ecosystem accounts nationally.
