Third Mission to Mexico for the Project NCAVES

On 27-28 February 2020, the Statistics Division of the United Nations (UNSD) and the National Institute of Statistics and Geographic Information-INEGI, held a technical meeting in Mexico City to discuss the progress on the implementation of the European Union-funded project Natural Capital Accounting and Valuation of Ecosystem Services (NCAVES) in Mexico.  As part of the project, Mexico is compiling pilot accounts on ecosystem extent and condition and ecosystem services (carbon sequestration, water supply and crops provision).

The meeting brought together experts, consultants and representatives from the Mexican environmental sector and academia to discuss the advances in the biophysical modeling and compilation of ecosystem extent and condition accounts as well as ecosystem services.  The project in Mexico, led by INEGI, is in the stage of reviewing the condition accounts at national level and in the economic valuation of ecosystem services.

During the course of the two-day mission, the active participation of officials from several Mexican institutions denoted their commitment to the advancement of this project, which has significantly advanced part in piloting ecosystem extent accounts and economic valuation of ecosystem services. Likewise, it was highlighted, as a good practice of the project, the establishing of thematic interinstitutional working subgroups for valuation of ecosystem services, application of public policies and other sub-groups, thus bringing together experts, producers and users of ecosystem accounts under the overall coordination of INEGI.

INEGI is the lead insstitution implementing the project NCAVES in Mexico.  The project is funded by the European Union.
