Technical Recommendations in support of the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting 2012—Experimental Ecosystem Accounting

The System of Environmental-Economic Accounting 2012—Experimental Ecosystem Accounting (SEEA EEA) constitutes a coherent framework for integrating measures emanating from ecosystems and their flows of services with measures emanating from economic and other human activities. The SEEA EEA has been published in 2013 and since then many countries began testing and experimentation at the national and subnational levels. The Technical Recommendations have been designed to serve as an intermediate step in the transition from the SEEA EEA to its revision, which is scheduled for completion in 2021, and are intended to support countries’ efforts in testing and experimentation with ecosystem accounting.

Publication of the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (SEEA AFF)

FAO and UNSD jointly published today the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (SEEA AFF).

This internationally agreed methodology provides users in member countries with a coherent statistical framework to help better understand sustainable food and agriculture systems, by highlighting the complex relationships that exist between the economy, people and the environment.

The SEEA AFF contributes to the overall SEEA accounting platform, which is endorsed by the UN Statistical Commission as the reference tool for bringing together economy and environment statistics, in support of natural capital accounting, ecosystems services evaluation, biodiversity assessment and SDG monitoring and reporting.

The SEEA AFF is increasingly being tested in countries. Select accounts for forestry and forest resources were compiled in 2019 for several African countries, including Morocco, Cameroon and Senegal, in cooperation with UNECA. In 2020, the SEEA AFF has been introduced as the core statistical framework for the joint analysis of agriculture and biodiversity issues in two FAO-GEF country projects, Afghanistan and Sudan.
