London Group's 29th Meeting in South Africa

The 29th Meeting of the London Group on Environmental Accounting convened in Pretoria, South Africa, from 11 to 14 September 2023, hosted by Statistics South Africa.  This marked the second time that South Africa hosted this group’s meeting, with the last gathering on its soil held in 2007. 

Established in 1993, the London Group serves as a platform for environmental accounting practitioners to share their experience in developing and implementing environmental accounts. The members of this group, comprising experts from national statistical offices but also international organizations, meet annually to discuss research topics and issues related to the advancement of science and application of the SEEA in countries around the world.

This year’s meeting was attended by approximately 50 participants representing 22 countries, mostly from national statistical offices, but also international organizations and academia.

The opening remarks were delivered by Mr. Risenga Maluleke, Statistician-General of Statistics South Africa, who highlighted the importance of global collaboration in advancing natural capital accounts within countries, regions, and continents.

Mr. Sven Kaumanns, Chair of the London Group and representative from the Federal Statistical Office of Germany introduced the agenda for the four-day meeting, covering a broad range of SEEA-related issues.

This year's meeting has focused on substantive issues related to the upcoming revision of the SEEA Central Framework, as well as on other conceptual topics related to the development of the SEEA, such as accounting for ecosystem services in physical and monetary values, integrated accounts, input-output models and integrated accounts.
