Canada's Commitment to Nature: Federal Nature Accountability Bill and International Partnership for Natural Capital Accounting"
On 9 December 2023, during #COP28, Canada’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change Canada, the Honorable Steven Guilbeault, announced the Government of Canada’s commitment to introduce a federal #nature accountability bill next year. The bill will establish an accountability framework for the federal government to fulfill its commitments under the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). Since the SEEA is an important component of the measurement framework for the Convention on Biological Diversity’s GBF, this increases the policy relevance of Statistics Canada’s Census of Environment.
During the same announcement, Minister Guilbeault also made public a ground-breaking agreement: “Canada is joining with the United States and Australia on a new initiative that will help decision makers account for the full value of nature when making plans and policies, called the Partnership of Cooperation on Natural Capital Accounting, Environmental-Economic Accounting, and Related Statistics.”
