South Africa is one of the five pilot countries participating in an international project on ecosystem accounting. The project, entitled Natural Capital Accounting and Valuation of Ecosystem Services, is led by the United Nations Statistics Division and UN Environment, with funding from the European Union.
Stats SA and SANBI are leading the project in South Africa and will work closely with a range of national and sub-national stakeholders to further develop ecosystem accounts nationally.
The purpose of the workshop is to 1) explain the use of ecosystem accounting and its relevance for policy and decision making; 2) present an overview of South Africa's ecosystem accounting and other envrionemntal accounting work; 3) broaden plans on ecoystem accounting; 4) present for discussion and input an initial programme of work for the next two years.
