Quarterly greenhouse gas emissions (industry and household): Sources and methods
Document Summary:
This report presents the methodology for construction quarterly greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions estimates to track emissions in relation to economic activity for New Zealand, within the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) framework. The report introduces readers to aspects of statistical methodology usually seen in -sub-annual macroeconomic statistics.
Measuring GHG emissions on a quarterly basis, using an industry classification consistent with those used in producing gross domestic product (GDP), allows for a quick identification of the emissions path the economy is on, and whether emissions are decoupling from economic growth. Quarterly information also allows turning points to be identified with greater accuracy, which may be useful for decision-makers. The Quarterly GHG emissions (industry and household) estimates became official statistical series for New Zealand in July 2022.
