Document Summary:
Information on New Zealand’s water stocks updated: Released on 27 May 2021, the ‘Environmental-economic accounts: Water physical stocks year ended 1995–2020’ pulls together data from the National Institute of Water and Atmosphere (NIWA) and the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences Limited (GNS) to illustrate how New Zealand’s physical stocks of water change over time. Water physical stock accounts present information on the hydrological cycle based on the System of Environmental-Economic Accounts (SEEA). This release covers water quantity and provides estimates of national and regional water flows (precipitation, evapotranspiration, and rivers) and change in storage (ice, snow, soil moisture, groundwater, lakes and reservoirs, and hydro-electric generation water use), from 1995 to 2020. This current release both extends the length of the time series and is the first to provide quarterly estimates. Data is presented according to the hydrological year, that is the year 1 July to 30 June. The quarters are supplied as July to September; October to December; January to March; and April to June, with the first quarter being the quarter ending September.
