Jacqui Vitas (Australia)

Co-chair of the UN Committee of Experts on Environmental-Economic Accounting and General Manager of the Economy and Environment Division, Australian Bureau of Statistics 

Ms. Vitas began her official statistics career in 1997, initially at the United Kingdom’s Office for National Statistics (ONS), and since 2016, at the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). Her first role involved work on the 2001 population census, after which she spent nearly a decade in the ONS Methodology Directorate.

Since 2010, Ms. Vitas has held senior positions in economic statistics, covering areas such as National Accounts, Balance of Payments, Financial Accounts, Public Finance, Labour Statistics and Business Surveys.  Since 2023, she has also overseen the ABS’s environmental-economic accounting programme. 

Ms. Vitas has contributed to a number of international projects and books. She co-authored (as Jacqui Jones) ‘Designing and Conducting Business Surveys’; co-edited ‘Advances in Business Statistics Methods and Data Collection; and co-edited the ‘Handbook for Monitoring and Evaluating Business Surveys Response Burdens’. She serves as the Executive Sponsor for the ABS and Statistics Indonesia (BPS) partnership, and is also a member of the United Nations Network of Economic Statisticians.
