A conceptual framework and practical structure for implementing ecosystem condition accounts

Ecosystem condition is a key component of the SEEA EEA framework. This study develops a conceptual framework and practical structure for implementing ecosystem condition accounts, focusing on six core elements: defining ecosystem condition, establishing a conceptual framework, explaining its role within the SEEA EEA, adopting a multi-purpose approach, detailing condition account components, and developing a three-stage reporting structure. The framework is based on ecological understanding, emphasizing the interdependencies of ecosystem composition, structure, function, and their capacity to provide services. Key components recommended for comprehensive and transparent condition accounts include intrinsic and instrumental values, a classification of characteristics, a reference condition for comparing indicator levels, and a three-stage approach for compiling accounts. This inclusive framework and practical methods aim to enhance the ecosystem accounting framework, supporting a broader range of applications and users.
