Workshop on the SEEA and Environment-related SDG Indicators for Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia

UNSD in collaboration with UNECE and the National Statistical Committee of the Republic of Belarus (Belstat) organized a workshop on the “System of Environmental-Economic Accounting Central Framework (SEEA-CF) and environment-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indicators” for countries of Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia in Minsk, Belarus, 15-18 January 2018. The workshop, which was the second phase of a blended learning training programme, provided a unique opportunity for over 40 participants from 12 countries who had already acquired an understanding of basic SEEA concepts through the SEEA CF online course to improve their knowledge through practical exercises and discussions on implementation issues. Experts from UNSD, UNECE and Statistics Netherlands facilitated discussions on topics such as energy accounts, water accounts, combined presentations and institutional mechanisms for the implementation of the SEEA. Participants also provided an overview of the work done so far in countries to implement the SEEA and plans for the short and medium terms. For most countries priority accounts to be compiled in the next 2 years included air emission accounts and environmental expenditure accounts; participants requested that UNSD in collaboration with partners continue to provide capacity building in these areas through online and in-person trainings.
