The National Statistical Office, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) of the Government of India, in collaboration with United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), UN Environment with the support of the European Union, is organizing the first Natural Capital Accounting and Valuation of Ecosystem Services (NCAVES) National Forum in India.

Due to travel restrictions, the forum will be held virtually over three separate days, on 14, 21, and 28 January  2021.

The Forum would lay emphasis on Policy Demand for Natural Capital Accounting (NCA) in India and emerging opportunities for NCA to support national priorities in India. It would also highlight the achievement of the country in natural capital accounting and valuation of ecosystem services.

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) of the Government of India, has taken up several initiatives under the project “Natural Capital Accounting and Valuation of Ecosystem Services (NCAVES)” which aims to advance the theory and practice of ecosystem accounting in India.  The project  can help integrate the concerns of sustainability and conserving the environment for future use while charting the course for economic development. Since the work related to environment accounting in India is still in its early stages, primarily because of the large number of subjects to be covered under this domain, it is necessary to engage in a collaborative effort  various stakeholders, including Line Ministries, state governments, multilateral organizations and research institutions for compiling a complete suite of accounts.

The objectives of the Forum would be:

a. To present India’s achievements in the domain of Natural Capital Accounting (NCA);

b. To prioritize the emerging opportunities for NCA in India;

c. To familiarize stakeholders with the work undertaken by the different international agencies in the area of NCA; and

d. To provide a platform to selected Research Institutions to present their research conducted in the valuation of ecosystem services.

The Forum shall include, apart from the presentations and discussions, a “twitter poster session” on various research studies highlighting the importance of these accounts, which will be organized concurrently with the Forum during January 14-28, 2021.

The Forum is a programmed activity of the European Union-funded project NCAVES.
